Groundwater reserves are one of the main sources of water supply in arid and semi-arid regions. In recent decades, natural factors such as climate change and human factors such as immethodical harvesting and improper management have caused a drop in the groundwater water level and negative consequences in Iran. Therefore, maintaining and continuously monitoring groundwater quality and identifying vulnerable and sensitive areas in planning is particularly important. The present study identifies and evaluates the exploitation status of groundwater resources in Yazd province. For this purpose, the statistics and information on water sources and uses were analyzed by considering the changes in the number and amount of withdrawal from wells, springs, and qanats. To quantitatively and qualitatively investigate the plains of the province in 10 years (1386-1996), quantitative zoning maps including groundwater level maps were prepared in the GIS software. Also, by examining important parameters such as sodium (Na), chlorine (Cl), sulfate (SO4), acidity (pH), total hardness (T.H.), dissolved solute concentration (T.D.H.), and electrical conductivity (EC), chemical quality and their changes were evaluated. Finally, the zoning map of the province's underground water quality for drinking and agriculture was obtained, the results indicated high water salinity for agriculture and the drinking water in Mehriz, Ardakan, and Bafaq showed low quality. In terms of exploitation of the plains of the province in the future, the overall level drop and the annual average level drop with the reservoir deficit were taken into consideration and the plains that had unfavorable conditions were identified as Yazd-Ardakan, Abargo, Chahak plains. Shahryar and Bahadran were classified as critical permitted areas in terms of exploitation of groundwater resources
