[English]

Climate change and human activities have exerted immense pressure on groundwater resources in arid and semi-arid regions, particularly in the Middle East. In addition to climatic impacts, over-extraction from aquifers in alluvial plains has led to water level decline, water quality degradation, and ecosystem destruction. Recent studies indicate that the intensification of water stress and droughts in these regions is driven by rising temperatures due to global warming and subsequent changes in groundwater levels; therefore, an accurate assessment of these trends is essential for sustainable water resources management. In this study, a hybrid climate-artificial intelligence approach was employed to predict the impacts of climate change on the groundwater level of selected well in the Maragheh-Bonab plain. Initially, climatic variables were downscaled for future periods using an ensemble of Global Climate Models (GCMs) from the CMIP6 project and the LARS-WG stochastic weather generator under two emission scenarios. To model the complex and non-linear relationship between climatic variables and water resources, a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) deep neural network was utilized to simulate and forecast groundwater levels. The key innovation of this research is the integration of novel climate data with deep learning architecture and the incorporation of the time-lag effects of hydroclimatic variables to enhance prediction accuracy. Climate projection results indicate a significant increasing trend in temperature across all months and a shift in the temporal distribution of precipitation, leading to increased evapotranspiration and reduced natural aquifer recharge. Furthermore, the LSTM model demonstrated that under the projected climate scenarios, the groundwater level will experience a substantial decline. This drawdown is a direct consequence of the simultaneous effects of reduced climate-driven recharge and increased demand for water resources.
